Sweden and Finland
The first six images are landscapes from the area around ÅrreNjarka in Swedish Lapland. The other twenty four comprise landscapes and birds of the Kuusamo region in Finland. Kuusamo lies just south of the Arctic Circle, north east of Oulu and close to the Russian border. A major feature of the area is the Oulanka National Park, around the Oulanka River. This, like the other rivers of the Kuusamo region, flows eastwards into Russia before turning north to reach the White Sea. Winter in this part of Finland includes the whole of March, but days are lengthening and temperatures rising: daytime temperatures were in the range -5/+2°C.
